Functional Capacity Evaluations

A traditional FCE is performed to determine an individual’s physical capabilities and is usually performed after an injury to determine their ability to maintain or obtain gainful employment and to assess their level of function.  Often times, a disability rating accompanies this type of evaluation.   The Department of Vocational Rehabilitation may be involved.

This evaluation is accomplished by:

1. The individual undergoes several areas of testing such as orthopedic, neurologic, postural, cardiovascular fitness, NIOSH static lift, and dynamic lift testing.

2. Then a range of motion evaluation of the cervical and lumbar spines, as well as a grip and pinch strength assessment of both hands is performed to establish the function-ability of the person.

3. The test is focused around the specific injury of the person being evaluated.

4. All testing is performed with computerized equipment except for the dynamic lift test.

Benefits of Functional Capacity Testing:

- Provides information regarding the capabilities of an injured person regarding their future earning capacity, permanent work restrictions, and functional capabilities.
